About the Component

Lost Space. Art and Edu

is an artistic and educational component of the international project CEMORY – Central European Memory of the Holocaust in a Multicultural and Multidimensional Perspective, coordinated by the Jagiellonian University. The component is led by the Faculty of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

The initiative responds to the profound and irreversible transformation of the spatial, social, and cultural landscape of Central and Eastern Europe following the destruction of Jewish space during the Second World War. Its aim is to foster critical reflection on the consequences of this loss, to deepen understanding of its long-term impact, and to seek contemporary methods of engaging with “non-renewable” cultural, social, and human resources that cannot be reconstructed.

The component comprises three interconnected strands

1.Research – conducted with experts in Jewish urban, architectural, and cultural space to build a substantive foundation for artistic work and educational processes.
2. Artistic – realised through the exhibition Lost Space. Exhibition in Motion, which presents artistic interpretations of the former Jewish space, encouraging reflection on loss, memory, and responsibility. The exhibition will travel across the eastern borderland of the European Union, creating contexts for local dialogue.

Educational – implemented by experienced partners, offering programmes that translate research and artistic outcomes into learning processes, supporting the development of critical and historically informed perspectives among diverse audiences.
